Selected number one or two overall -- before anyone else in the 2003 NBA Draft, James found himself playing in his home state of Ohio, on a terrible team! The Cleveland Cavaliers had a 17-65 record for the 2002-2003 season, before they got LeBron. Dead-last place.

In James’ first season, the Cavs rose to 35-47. LeBron amazingly averaged 20.9 points per game and was named rookie of the year, beating out first-year phenom Carmelo Anthony, who had played college ball at Syracuse. LeBron was one of three rookies in NBA history to average at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists in one season (joining Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan). Is he better than Carmelo? Most think so.

In 2004, James played on the U.S. Olympic basketball team that captured the bronze medal in Athens.

In James’ second NBA season, he averaged 27.2 points and the Cavs had a winning record, 42-40, narrowly missing the playoffs. LeBron played in his first NBA All-Star game in 2005 -- the second All-Star starter in Cavalier history (after Shawn Kemp) and dropped in 13 points. He also became the youngest and second-fastest player (after Oscar Robertson) to reach 3,500 career points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists. He scored a career high 56 points against the Raptors in a game at Toronto on March 20, 2005.

With a 50-32 record for the 2005-06 season, the Cavaliers made the playoffs for the first time in the James era, seeded 4th in the Eastern conference. James had achieved a scoring average of 31.4 points per game.

In his first-ever playoff game, leading Cleveland against the Wizards in an opening round Eastern Conference game, he became the first player to score a triple-double in his first playoff game since Magic Johnson did it in 1980. LeBron racked up 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.

LeBron James, who towered at 6’8” and 240 pounds as a high school senior, became the “can’t miss” prospect who actually didn’t miss. After three years in the NBA, at age 21, he is a Most Valuable Player candidate. For the 2005-06 season he finished first in the league in minutes played (3361), second in triple-doubles (scoring in double figures in points, assists, and rebounds in the same game), and third in scoring average (31.4 points per game).

LeBron signed nearly $100 million worth of global endorsement deals just out of high school, skipped college, went number one overall in the 2003 NBA draft at age 18, becameof the year at age 19, and made a contender out of the once perennially horrible Cleveland Cavaliers.

His nicknames have evolved from “Bron-Bron” (what his mom Gloria calls him) to King James, to LBJ, the latter of which sponsor Nike has adopted. Thanks to a $90 million deal he signed with the footwear and apparel maker before he even was drafted by an NBA team, his name has graced sneakers and he has starred in amazing and hilarious TV commercials.

James also has advertising deals with Upper Deck sports cards, Bubblicious gum, and Coca-Cola’s Powerade, which in 2004 named a drink flavor, Flava23, after him. Even LeBron’s idol, Michael Jordan, who pitched for Gatorade and also had uniform number 23, didn’t get his own flavor.

Cleveland vs. Washington - Game 1 2006 Playoffs: Bar none one of the greatest rookie playoff debuts in NBA history. The 21 year old James busts out a triple-double in his first game. James finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, becoming the first player since Magic Johnson to post a triple-double in his first playoff game. I hope this game is the first of many playoff duels with Arenas. Watching these guys go back and forth in this series - hoisting their teams on their backs - was amazing. Bird and Magic revisited. Cleveland vs. San Antonio- Game 1 2007 Finals: Ah, Lebron failed to outsmart even a rookie, ha! Daniel Gibson led Cavs with 16 points while LeBron only sported low 14. After the second quarter, Lebron only scored 4 points, hahahaha! Plus, his first field goal came at the 3rd quarter, sad, really. Gibson's done better than him. That game was really miserable for Cleveland as they lost 85-76. Too bad.

LeBron James was born in Akron, Ohio, on December 30, 1984 to 16-year-old Gloria James. His father was never identified. He grew up poor, with a single mother who could barely support herself, and he has said that in 4th grade he missed school more than half of the time. Though he never suported his mother like is father told him, he ended up living with the father of a friend, Frank Walker, who introduced the nine-year-old LeBron to basketball and other sports.

LeBron buckled down in school and joined the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars, a local Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team run by Dru Joyce II. After national success on that team at ages 13 and 14, LeBron and several other members of the Shooting Stars took advantage of the open school enrollment policy in Akron and chose to attend St. Vincent-St. Mary, a Catholic high school in the city. In 2001, LeBron was the first sophomore ever to be named to USA Today’s All-American high school basketball team.

In 2002, as a junior in high school, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which anointed him “The Chosen One.”

Later that same year, he led the St. Vincent team in a slaughter of perennial national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in the first high school regular season game to be shown on national TV. There was criticism for that (newspaper writer Jerry Lindquist of the Richmond Times-Dispatch wrote: “Is Junior High next? How low can ESPN go?”), but ESPN2 scored its highest rating in almost two years. That game and some of LeBron’s other greatest highlight-reel classics are described in this article.

James was PARADE magazine’s High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year as a junior and senior, becoming the first repeat winner in the history of the award, and he was consensus 2003 National High School Player of the Year.

LeBron also played wide receiver at St. Vincent-St. Mary and had 700 yards in the 2000-2001 season. He quit football after his junior year to focus solely on basketball.

Controversy struck as his senior year wound down in early 2003. Ohio’s high school athletics authorities started checking into his mother’s gift of a Hummer H2 for his 18th birthday, which she bought on loan knowing riches were soon to come. Media pundits again fumed, bemoaning a world in which a high school jock can have a Hummer. LeBron also accepted two throwback jerseys from a local store owner in exchange for some autographs and photos. Because of these perceived indiscretions, the Ohio High School Athletic Association ruled that St. Vincent-St. Mary had to forfeit one game and suspended James indefinitely, until a county court overturned the ruling.

Oh yeah, there also was the 52-point game he had at the Prime Time Shootout in Trenton, NJ near the end of his high school career.

When he played in his final high school game, at the Capital Classic in Washington in April 2003, organizers took out a $10 million insurance policy for James, at his request, just in case he suffered a career-ending injury.

Greatest rookie of all time?

No question LBJ is up there with the greats, though it would be perhaps unwise to elevate him above Wilt Chamberlain, who averaged 37.6 points a game in his rookie NBA season, had been recruited by hundreds of colleges, and was a nationally known high school star before high school games were nationally televised.
